
In 1990, Solid Waste Management Districts were formed by HB 1240 as a separate local governmental entity to manage solid waste in Indiana.
The mission of the Monroe County Solid Waste Management District (District) is to secure a healthier environment in south-central Indiana, by eliminating waste going to final disposal through reduction of source materials, reuse of reusable materials, and recovery of recyclable materials and by offering educational resources and programs; and by promoting sustainable materials practices throughout our communities.

The District's FREE environmental education educates, motivates, and inspires Indiana residents to conserve natural resources and meet the needs of our society while maintaining a healthy environment now and in the future.
Activites integrate key environmental concepts that meet state standards.
Sessions not only promote science but literacy, health and wellness, economics, social studies, family & consumer science, and more.
Sessions stimulate students and community to think critically about their own actions and assess actions of others, fosters understanding about the connections in the use of natural resources and waste disposal, and teaches pollution prevention and behaviors that lead to healthy communities.

Accepted items: Aluminum and steel cans, clean scrap metal, white paper, mixed paper, wrapping paper, junk mail, magazines and catalogs, paper sacks, phone books, newspaper, cardboard/paperboard, rigid plastic containers (#1 - #7), clear, brown, blue, and green glass bottles and jars, shredded paper, CDs, DVDs, hard plastic cases of: CDs, DVDs, books (paperback & hardcover), and styrofoam packing peanuts (boxed or bagged).

The reuse sidewalk at Central Recycling & Reuse will be open from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm Tuesdays through Saturdays for dropoff and pickup of reuse items.
